PEARLAND LEADERS
TAKE ISSUES TO AUSTIN
AUSTIN - Representatives of Pearland’s chamber of commerce, city leaders, local school district, concerned business owners and citizens traveled to Austin on February 27-28, 2008 to meet with members of key state agencies to ask for support on issues affecting the city’s rapid growth.
This now annual event, coordinated by the Pearland Area Chamber of Commerce, focused on 10 state agencies representing topics ranging from transportation to drainage, education to quality of life issues.
Carol R. Artz, President of the Pearland Area Chamber of Commerce said “Last year we created a mission statement for the first Pearland Day in Austin to increase the general awareness among state legislators, agencies and staff about Pearland as a large fast-growth community in the Houston metropolitan area; establish two-way positive working relationships with them; communicate needs and issues of particular interest affecting the Pearland community; and educate and involve the local citizenry regarding the activities of the Committee and legislative actions which affect the community. We were successful in our second year’s legislative day. I’m proud of our community and those who help take our message to Austin.”
One of the key delegations -- led by City Councilman Kevin Cole who made the city’s presentation to the Texas Transportation Commission -- during this year’s visits focused on transportation issues including the city’s application for pass through financing that would provide timely expansion of Cullen Parkway and other safety and mobility needs that have been expressed by the citizens of Pearland.
During the two-day visit, city leaders continued to voice their concerns about the expansion of the Blue Ridge Landfill and to get a status update during a meeting with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
Delegates also called on administrators and staffers in the Office of the Governor for Economic Development and Tourism, Office of the Attorney General, Texas Department of Insurance, Texas Education Agency, Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission and the Texas Workforce Commission.
“This was one of the most impressive initiatives that I have seen in 20 years both in state government and in the private sector,” said first-time participant David P. Terry, Project Manager for HNTB Corporation. Artz said that the program has really produced some remarkable results in just the two years that program has been in existence. Her goals are continue to recruit more
business leaders, school district representatives and local residents so that Pearland’s concerns are heard and dealt with in Austin. |
